3 Companies That Have Generated Major Success By Implementing Serious Games

These businesses have revamped the way they train their employees by introducing serious games that educate team members

The practice of using games to foster educational development began long before technology as we know it today ever existed.

In fact, Friedrich Fröbel introduced educational toys in the early 1800s, while developing what is now known around the world as the Kindergarten curriculum. He provided children with wooden shapes, building blocks, and other fun experiential tools that contributed to healthy early development.

Fast-forward a few hundred years, and the introduction of the computer brought with it a new realm of possibility for learning via games. The Oregon Trail, an educational game created by the Minnesota Educational Computing Consortium, is widely-regarded as the serious game that revolutionized the concept of educational software.

It taught school children about 19th century pioneer life, placing them in the role of wagon leader, and forcing them to make navigational decisions as they continue along their learning pathway.

Today, serious games are much more comprehensive than their predecessors, offering elements like personalized learning pathways, reward structures, time pressures, quests, and leaderboards.

The benefits of game-based learning have also expanded far beyond grade school classrooms— with businesses, post-secondary institutions, healthcare facilities, and other groups implementing serious games as a means of enhancing learning and development efforts.

Thus, in today’s blog, we’ll be taking a look at some of the most successful implementations of serious games by today’s top businesses and organizations, with a particular focus on the results they’ve been able to generate.

By studying companies using game-based learning, readers can familiarize themselves with the serious game market and how beneficial it can truly be.

Let’s get to it.

Here Are 3 Companies That Have Generated Major Success By Implementing Serious Games:

1. Checker's

Checker’s is a beloved American fast-food chain. Part of their claim to fame is that each order is made fresh, placing added pressure on employees to master the preparation of each item on the menu.

To address this steep learning curve, Checker’s invested in a serious game called the Sandwich Master app. The convenient mobile learning app takes each employee through the sandwich-making process for each menu item, preparing them to fulfill the multiple orders they’ll eventually receive while on the job.

The app was a major success for the franchise, since it allowed employers to view employee progress reports, and more accurately determine when a new hire had completed an adequate amount of training.

Additionally, it eliminated the need for team leaders to physically mentor new employees as they familiarize themselves with the menu and the preparation process— a definite money saver!

2. Starbucks

Starbucks is known for its expansive menu of beverages, sandwiches, and baked goods. But what separates Starbucks from other coffee companies is the hundreds of ways they allow customers to customize their beverage— whether it’s soy milk, extra whip cream, or added flavor shots, every order is unique, and must be crafted precisely.

In fact, there are more than 87,000 possible drink combinations available via the coffee chain giant.

Thus, baristas often experience confusion and stress during their first weeks on the job as they absorb all of the information being presented to them.

This is why Starbucks recently invested in their very own barista training app, giving their employees the ability to practice making drink orders at home. Within the app, employees are provided with detailed recipe instructions for each beverage, and the recipes automatically adjust for the selected cup size (tall, grande, venti, etc).

Since launching the app, employees have responded favorably, stating that being able to study and memorize recipes from the convenience of their mobile device has greatly improved their productivity.

Starbucks has even stated that enhancing the gamification elements of the app is a priority as the app gains traction— and we’re excited to see what happens next!

3. Deloitte

This is one of the most compelling serious games examples in the learning and development industry, and one that established Deloitte as luminaries in the mobile learning space.

The company knew they wanted to ensure that leadership development remained a top priority for their staff members. But how could the company deliver leadership training to its massive employee base in a convenient and engaging way?

Via a game-based learning app, of course.

In their leadership training app, employees take on a series of “missions”, starting with an on-boarding mission which familiarizes them with the app.

From there, as users complete each mission, they receive badges and their scores are tallied on the app leaderboard. Deloitte didn’t opt for a traditional leaderboard, however. Instead, they chose to have three leaderboards— one for each level of user (think: beginner, intermediate, and expert). This ensures that employees are only competing with others from the same competency level.

The app has been highly successful, since it allows employees to hone their leadership skills in a risk-free environment, in a way that fosters social learning and heightens engagement.

The investment certainly paid off— the training curriculum average completion time dropped by almost 50 percent after implementation
