This Month: Innovation Doesn't Have to be Disruptive, No Silver Bullet for Cybersecurity, Are You a Good Listener?, ChatGPT is Going to Change Education Not Destroy It & More!

In this June edition of ARC Reads we continue to share the latest tech and business articles that have piqued our interest.

What We’re Reading This Month

Innovation Doesn’t Have to Be Disruptive – Much of business is about aggression and fear: beating the competition, stealing market share, disrupting or being disrupted. Most of us dislike those emotions and behaviors because they fill us with anxiety, making us feel we are under threat and may be marginalized or destroyed if we don’t strike first. It’s a scarcity-based view of the world. What if we could shift from fear to hope, from a mindset of scarcity to one of abundance? The idea that we can create new markets and grow without disrupting others suggests that business does not have to be a destructive, fear-based, win-lose game. More about innovation here.

There’s No Silver Bullet for Cybersecurity Some years ago, the CEO of a major financial institution called me after his company had suffered an online attack. By the time I appeared in his office, customer data was likely already circulating on the dark web. As the company’s counsel, I needed to determine not only what happened, but what — and when — we could tell regulators and customers. Access to the company’s servers was thought to have been penetrated through an outside service provider. Article here.

Are you a good listener? The answer may surprise you. Are you a good listener?  Most of us probably believe we listen to people all the time. But how much of what we think of as “listening” is really just some form of active hearing where we’re waiting for our turn to say something clever or funny or thoughtful?

ChatGPT is going to change education, not destroy it – This initial panic from the education sector was understandable. ChatGPT, available to the public via a web app, can answer questions and generate slick, well-structured blocks of text several thousand words long on almost any topic it is asked about, from string theory to Shakespeare. Each essay it produces is unique, even when it is given the same prompt again, and its authorship is (practically) impossible to spot. It looked as if ChatGPT would undermine the way we test what students have learned, a cornerstone of education.

Cybersecurity & Guidance – Cybersecurity is the top threat facing business and critical infrastructure in the United States, according to reports and testimony from the Director of National Intelligence, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security. All water systems should act to examine cybersecurity vulnerabilities and develop a cybersecurity risk management program.  Need assistance?, contact our utility experts at ARC!
